Network Security

AutoFarm3D runs locally, which means your files and data never leave your local network. This is perfect if you have sensitive files, operate under an NDA, or just want to keep your data private. This means that nobody, not even 3DQue, can access your files or data unless they have access to your network.

If someone has access to your network, they essentially have full access to your farm and printers, so it's important to make sure your network is secure, and that you trust everyone who has access to your network.

Here are some tips to help you keep your network secure.

Network Security Checklist​

  • Use a private network

Do not set up AutoFarm3D on a public or shared network. We recommend setting up a separate private network specifically for your farm.

  • Use ethernet connections

Ethernet connections are more secure because they require physical access to your network.

  • Disable WiFi

If you're using only ethernet, you can disable WiFi on your router. This will make your network more secure.

  • If you must use WiFi, use a strong password

Your password should be at least 12 characters long and difficult to guess.

  • Change your WiFi password frequently

Especially if previous employees have left your organization.

  • Change the default admin password for your router

This is the password to access your router's admin panel. You can usually find instructions for this in your router's manual.

  • Do not use port forwarding

Port forwarding creates a huge security risk, and should never be used for AutoFarm3D. If you want to access your farm remotely, use Quinly Tunnel which is much more secure.

Do I really need a separate network?​

We strongly recommend using a separate network for your farm. This means that your farm will have its own router, and will not be accessible through your main public/shared network. This is the most secure way to run your farm, and is the best way to protect your data. This is important for businesses, schools, and other organizations that have many users on their network.

If you're operating a small farm at home, your home network should be fine, but for maximum security, we still recommend setting up a separate network for your farm. This will help protect your farm from any potential security issues related to other devices connected to your home network.

What if someone has access to my network?​

If someone has access to your network, they essentially have full access to your printers. This is also true for other locally-hosted 3D printing software such as OctoPrint, Klipper, Duet, PrusaLink, etc. If you're printing over your local network, it's important to make sure your local network is secure, and that you trust everyone who has access to your network.
